Invitation to Hong Kong for Taipo Mega Mall

Hi Friends and fellow collectors,

I realized I have not been updating my space for a long long time. Sorry guys!

Last weekend, I was invited to host my first snowglobe exhibition in Hong Kong at theTaipo Mega Mall, one of the Sun Hung Kai properties.

More than 160 pieces of snowglobes is being showcase in this exhibtion and it lasts from the Dec 5th till Dec 28th.

At the grand opening ceremony on the 5th, 2 local celebrites, Sharon Chan and Tricia Chan were guests for the event. Together with me, we started the exhibition by placing 3 snowglobes on one of the exhibition stands.

The most popular snowglobes were the LV globe that was produced to commemorate the 1st year anniverary of the Champs-Elysees store opening, as well as my biggest snowglobe who has a diameter of 150mm. Last by not least, I have to feature my first snowglobe with the Cat and the Mouse which my husband gave to me as a Christmas present in 2000 and that's how I started my quest in snowglobe collecting.

Interesting, I have been interviewed by many local media, and I really felt "popular" at one point! Cool.

I will share some photos here with you all. Enjoy!

Invitation to Dubai for the Collector - July 14-23

At the outset of the 11th year edition of  Dubai Summer Surprises 2008, They have invited me to be a part of this one-of-a-kind event and represent China among the selected collectors around the world to participate in one of their signature events, The Collectors.

The DSS which was first launched in 1998 has since grown over the years in leaps and bounds and celebrated the completion of a decade last year in 2007. Consisting of numerous exciting activities DSS has today become the ideal getaway for family entertainment during the summer months. The DSS slogan, 'Big Fun for Little Ones', reflects the intention of this celebrated summer event in providing families with abundant entertainment possibilities. In its first year itself in 1998, DSS saw a high visitor number of 600,000 visitors and over the years this number has grown to 2,100,000 visitors in 2007.

Entertainment one of the main attributes of DSS has several events under its umbrella, one of which is The Collectors- scheduled this year from 15Jul – 22Jul, 2008 at the Wafi Mall. One of the most prestigious and successful events, The Collectors attracts a high profile of selected participants and places them on a pedestal of utmost exposure. With visitors flocking in to see the unique collections; and media rushing in to capture every single details, The Collectors has grown in multitudes in a very short time and is only aiming to grow bigger.

I am so looking forward to participate in this event.

Rising's Snowglobe Collection

Toby Lee is a collector from Lebanon and he started collecting snowglobes 3 years ago.At first he collected both plastic and glass globes but lately he decided that the glass ones are much prettier. Currently, Toby has around 100 glass globes mainly the 65mm and some mini globes and also some very big ones. His collection focus on locations and he also likes the Disney globes.

Unfortunately, no globe is available in Lebanon and his collection adds up through his trips to different destinations and he counts on his colleagues to buy him globes as gifts when they visit other countries. He would also shop from the internet.

Toby is trying to make some of his own globe, and he is hoping to create globe of his country which will have in it the famous CEDAR of Lebanon and the CITADEL of BAALBAK. Please visit Toby's MSN space to check out his collection: http://rising59.spaces.live.com/default.aspx

Becoming an Official Guinness World Record Holder

I have been notified by Guinness World Records last week that I have officially set the Guinness World Records for having the "Largest mini glass snowglobe collection in the world". Currently, I have over1200 pcs of mini snowglobes in my display room and the number is growing all the time.

I would like to take the opportunity to thank all my family and friends for your continuous support. Without you, setting this record wouldn't be possible.

Now that I have achieved my 1st goal, I want to carry on with my 2nd goal, which is to set up a Snowglobe collector's club. The club would enable snowglobe collectors to share their thoughts and ideas, to trade, buy and sell snowglobes with each other, to exhibit your snowglobe collection and finally, to get to know others who share the same interest.

I will be sending out emails to snowglobe collectors with a bunch of questions for you to answer. If you don't mind, please fill in as much information as possible and I will feature you and your collection in this site. My ultimate goal is to build my own snowglobe collecting website if I have enough club member. At the moment, I will start small. Later, I would consider publishing bi-monthly or quarterly newsletters and even hold annual gatherings. I have many many thoughts in mind, let me think them through and I will share with you all later.

Your participation are much appreciated and I really look forward communicating with you real soon.

PS: Being a member of Mini Globeland is totally free of charge! So please join the club!

cheers, Queen Snovari of Mini Globeland

What is a Snowglobe?

These beautiful glass globe collectible items are known by many names: snowglobes, snowdomes, snowscenes, snowshakers, snowstorms, waterglobes, waterdomes, waterballs, blizzard-weights, shake ‘em up, shakies, and snowies. Regardless of their names, they encapsulate some form of fascination for people of all ages around the world.

Advances in technology and manufacturing techniques allow snowglobes today to be finely crafted with minute details, increasing their aesthetic appeal. Mass production, in spite of popular beliefs, has not decreased the snowglobes' collectible value. With exceptions aside, most snowglobe manufacturers today still employ skilled artisans, designers, and sculptors. In such cases, each item still needs to be sculpted and painted by hand, rendering each piece a unique work of art.

The snowglobes' ability to capture emotional moments and cherished occasions make them irresistable to collectors. Each tiny scene in a globe evokes a special feeling as unique as viewing an emotionally charged painting. Aside from their wide emotional appeal,  snowglobes are perfect as souvenir items. Not only do snowglobes come in a variety of sizes and shapes, they are also sturdy and portable. Each finely crafted scenic detail in a globe adds a nice complimentary touch to one's travel memoirs.

Snowglobe History

It is believed that the creation of the original snowglobe was borrowed from the concept of glass-paperweight dating back as early as 1800’s in France. From there, in 1889, the world's first globe was created. This palm-sized glass globe featured the famous Eiffel Tower as its center-piece and has a ceramic base and fake snow. It was introduced to the public in the 1889 Paris Exposition and proved to be a successful souvenir item.

Later in the Victorian era, snowstorms, as they were called became popular as souvenirs, toys and desk paperweights. And in the early 1920’s, it crossed the Atlantic to the United States and Canada.

The pivotal point in the history of waterglobes came in 1927, when Joseph Garaja of Pittsburgh, filed a patent pertaining to the mass production of glass snowglobes of “artistic attractiveness and novel ornamentation.” Once the patent was granted on December 31, 1929, the concept was copied and snowglobes were soon sold everywhere.

Capitalizing on the popularity of snowglobes, American companies in the 1940's use them in their advertising campaigns. While in Europe, religious themed snowglobes were popular gifts for Catholic children.

Today’s snowglobes can come with music, revolving piece or base, lighting effect, button-activated snow blower and much more.

Snowglobe Care Tips

Cleaning your collectibles is probably the most dreaded job of a collector. When caring for your globes, always remember to dust them often. If you make it a plan to dust your collectibles when you vacuum your products will need less detailed care in the futures. An accumulation of dust will cause your products to look old and discolored if this happens clean the base of your globes with a mild, no abrasive cleaner. A window cleaner can also be used to clean the glass globe of your snowglobe.

Extreme temperatures can cause air bubbles. Extreme cold can cause a temporary leak as the piece defrosts and extreme heat can induce evaporation. To avoid this problem after receiving your globe try to store it at room temperature.

If your have musical snowglobes, do not over wind them, always make sure that the musical key is turned only twice at a time. Over winding a musical will cause the spring that rotates the musical to break and it is not possible to repair this once this has happened.

My Snowglobe Collection - How does it all started?

My snow globe collection started in Christmas 2000 when my boyfriend (now my husband Raymond) gave me a beautiful golf ball size, mini snow globe as my Christmas present.

I was so attracted to the creativity and craftsmanship of this snow globe. On the outside, there is a grey cat. Inside the  globe, there is a 24K gold computer mouse hiding. It is creative because the designer use a computer mouse for the cat to catch!

I am a cat lover, so for Raymond to choose this globe for me is very meaningful and this globe has become a symbol of our love. This is my favorite and the most expensive globe in my entire collection.

From then on, whenever and wherever I go shopping, I will look for mini size snow globe and collecting mini snow globe became my hobby.
